Music plays an important role throughout Tove Jansson's Moomin stories, particularly through characters such as Snufkin, whose harmonica accompanies many of the books' memorable moments. Several songs associated with the Moomin characters were originally written for theatrical productions rather than appearing in the novels themselves.
In 1959, theatre director Vivica Bandler encouraged Tove Jansson to expand the Moomin stories with songs for the stage. Jansson collaborated with Helsinki-based composer Erna Tauro, resulting in the first collection of Moomin songs, including Moomintroll's Song, Little My's Song, and other character pieces. Additional songs were written during the 1960s and 1970s for theatre productions and Swedish Television adaptations.
Although several of these songs became widely known in the Nordic countries, the complete collection remained unpublished until Mika Pohjola recorded all of Erna Tauro's surviving Moomin songs on the Moomin Voices album in 2002-2003. Working in collaboration with Tove Jansson's heirs, he also completed and arranged material that had previously existed only in manuscript form.
The album was scored for vocal ensemble and chamber orchestra, with Johanna Grüssner as featured vocalist. In 2005, the Finnish-language edition Muumilauluja was released with lyrics translated by Kirsi Kunnas and Vexi Salmi.
Both the Swedish Moomin Voices and the Finnish Muumilauluja editions, together with their accompanying sheet music, have been used as teaching material at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
